Barrow Hill Roundhouse and Chesterfield

Derbyshire

1 Days - 26/07/25

Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the UK’s last surviving operational railway roundhouse with working turntable.

Trip Description

Barrow Hill Roundhouse, built in 1870, and then threatened with demolition in 1991 when the site was closed by British Rail.  It was saved by a group of volunteers who have now transformed it into a unique railway museum and events venue.

Visit the Barrow Hill signal box and see the turntable in action.  Experience the complexities of the interlock system and other signalling mysteries. The signal box is a vantage point for taking photographs..
This is a working railway depot and some surfaces are uneven and maybe slippery in places.
